About

Welcome to the professional web site for Supercell Scientific and Consulting, LLC, an Oklahoma company headed by atmospheric scientist, severe storm enthusiast, outdoor photographer, football fan, and family man Roger Edwards. Elke Edwards handles the web tech and financials. Other professional colleagues of Roger’s may participate in or contract to Supercell from time to time.

Services available span a variety of scientific, photographic and writing possibilities: forensic meteorology, severe-storm tours, research projects (including field work in severe local storms and hurricanes), technical proofreading and editing, scientific writing and editing for both science and lay audiences, professional copy editing in nonfiction, and outdoor nature photography (specializing in sky, storms of all types, landscapes, and waterscapes).

Roger (full CV) has spent over 40 years in atmospheric science, beginning with the National Severe Storms Lab in Norman, as a federal student research aide and field-project leader while a meteorology student at the University of Oklahoma. That was followed after graduation and grad school by operational tropical meteorology at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, then a long career of severe-storms forecasting at the National Severe Storms Forecast Center in Kansas City and Storm Prediction Center in Norman. He retired as SPC Lead Forecaster at the end of 2024 after issuing thousands of watches and outlooks, being lead or co-author on over 100 scientific formal and conference papers, and lead-authoring ten formal scientific research papers (a known record for a full-time forecaster). From 2006 to 2026, he also served as Editor in Chief and a copy and technical editor for the Electronic Journal of Severe Storms Meteorology: America’s first all-electronic, formal journal in atmospheric science.

Under the Supercell banner, Roger has performed forensic-weather consulting with WeatherBell Analytics, storm tour guiding with Tempest Tours, and educational field guiding with The Ohio State University, as well as scientific research, presentations and seminars. His extensive understanding of tornadoes, thunderstorms, forecasting, mesoscale meteorology, and tropical cyclones has been informed deeply by over four decades of direct, in-person observation and photography of storms and sky. Roger has a vast portfolio of outdoor photography in the science and fine-art realms. For his contributions to storm spotting, chasing and severe-storms science, Roger has been elected to the Storm Chasing Hall of Fame. In his free time, Roger enjoys travel, fishing, gardening, photography, staring at clouds (preferably those that rotate fast), and of course, spending time with Elke (whom he met storm chasing), their three cats (who came from a storm chase), and his grown kids (named after hurricanes).
